From AAEP & AHC 'White Paper' on the Definition of Horses As Livestock

In 2002, the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Horse Council together issued a “White Paper” on efforts to reclassify horses as companion (or other non-livestock) animals. Because states continue to debate the horse’s legal status, the issue remains critical today. It seems relevant to republish the AAEP article here to clarify for the readers of the Colorado Horse Contact the ramifications of changes to livestock classification for horses.

January 26th, 2007 "Horsepower" Plates Moving Closer to Colorado Bumpers

3000 signatures in under three months? In a state as full of horses and horse-lovers as Colorado, it proved to be no trouble at all for the Colorado Horse Development Authority, who collected them in support of the special license plate honoring the most important player in Colorado's $1.6 billion horse industry. Now the plate program moves on to the Division of Motor Vehicles for final design, and into the legislative phase, during which lawmakers will decide the fate of the special plates.

Since the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo believes the "horse life" is the healthiest one, they are pleased to benefit a Colorado-based non-profit that helps horsewomen and men get back in the saddle as soon as possible. Established by a group of dressage enthusiasts, Renee's Friends Fund partners with local hospitals and cancer treatment centers to assist any breast cancer patient in need with non-medical expense items such as transportation, household costs, food and supportive help and therapies.

July 12th, 2006 Independent Analysis Finds Horses, U.S. Economy Would Suffer if Horse Slaughter Ban (H.R. 503) Passes

June 30, 2006 - Colorado Springs, CO -- In the midst of a federal legislative battle regarding the fate of unwanted horses, nine university professors from four states report that a ban on horse processing would actually do more harm than good to horse welfare in this country. The proposed Horse Slaughter Ban (H.R. 503) would also devastate the U.S. horse market by devaluing horses as much as $29 million or $304 per horse, according to the report released today.
